Where to start on the Norfolk Broads
Wroxham, Horning, Potter Heigham, or somewhere on the southern rivers? Where you start shapes your whole trip. Here's how the main bases compare.
Where to start on the Norfolk Broads matters more than people expect. The northern bases are sheltered and beginner-friendly, while the southern rivers are wider and more tidal. Most first-timers are happiest starting in the north.
Wroxham, the classic capital
Often called the capital of the Broads. It's central, well-stocked with shops and has the largest choice of hire boats, with quick access to Salhouse, Ranworth and the upper Bure. An ideal first base.
Horning, pretty and central
A lovely riverside village close to Wroxham, with good pubs and the same easy access to the northern broads. A relaxed, scenic place to begin.
Potter Heigham, for the Thurne
The gateway to the Thurne and Hickling, but home to the very low medieval bridge, which is worth understanding before you base yourself here. Beautiful, but check headroom.
The southern rivers
Bases on the Yare and Waveney open up wider, quieter water and the Breydon Water crossing. These are more exposed and tidal, and better once you've found your feet.

Boat hire base by base
What each starting point actually puts within reach in a short break or a week.
Wroxham is the busiest starting point on the Broads and the easiest to get to. It also sits at the top of the Bure, which shapes every route you'll take from it.
Horning is the prettiest of the big hire villages and sits further down the Bure than Wroxham, which quietly puts more of the Broads within reach of a short break.
Stalham sits at the top of the River Ant, away from the Bure crowds, with Barton Broad a few minutes downstream and the whole northern network below that.
Acle sits on the tidal Bure halfway to Great Yarmouth, which makes it the natural base for anyone who wants both halves of the Broads in one holiday.
Brundall is the main hire base on the River Yare, a few miles below Norwich, and it opens up the quieter, wider, more tidal half of the Broads.
Beccles is the Waveney's own base: a Suffolk market town with a proper quay, the quietest of the main hire starts and the loveliest river above it.
